Southern Central Suffolk’s Only NYS Designated Trauma Center
Long Island Community Hospital has met the stringent requirements of the American College of Surgeon’s Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT) and has been verified as an Adult Level III Trauma Center, recognized by the NY State Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Systems. This verification, which followed a comprehensive on-site review by a team of ACS trauma experts, confirms the hospital’s overall readiness to care for trauma patients from pre-hospitalization through rehabilitation.
Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance. The verification provides confirmation that the entire hospital has demonstrated a commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients, and makes them the only NYS designated trauma center in southern central Suffolk County.
“In addition to greatly enhancing the level of care for your patients and expanding the capabilities of the regional trauma system,” states Long Island Community Hospital President and CEO Richard T. Margulis, “this verification gives our local EMTs, EMTCCs and Paramedics the ability to deliver more trauma patients to definitive care in a shorter time frame. And because of the shorter travel distance to our hospital for many of our local responding agencies, ambulance crews will experience shorter transport times and faster return-to-service times.”
As a level III trauma center, the hospital is equipped with 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists; a comprehensive quality assessment program; transfer agreements with a level I (highest level) trauma center; a continuing education program for members of the trauma team including nursing and allied health staff; and a prevention and outreach program for the community.
The Level III Trauma certification is one of many recent improvements as a result of the hospital’s commitment to provide the highest level of quality care to the community including:
- The Knapp Cardiac Care Center
- Designated NYS Department of Health STEMI Center
- Designated NYS Department of Health Stroke Center
- 2018 American Heart Association Stroke Gold Plus, Target: Stroke Honor Role Elite Plus
